Child Right to Quality Education
The learning environment in many of the Palestinian schools has been far from conducive. Violence in schools has been identified as a major problem. The right to quality education will focus on addressing this issue through advocating for legal reform to clearly prohibit all forms of physical and humiliating punishment and through influencing social attitudes and culture through encouraging alternative methods of communication and dialogue. In addition, SCS will promote new active learning methods and value building education, empower child participation structures, increase the skills of children in IE schools to read and write and improve their physical environment.
Save the Children Sweden added value
SCS will contribute to the above changes through (1) Building the capacities of partners enabling them to have increased access to external funding for programmes and projects in the education area (teacher training, PHP, positive school environment, etc.); (2) Providing technical support to schools with regards to PHP and positive disciplining methods; (3) Ensuring cross cutting initiatives between protection and education so that a more comprehensive approach toward quality education can be reached. This will imply fostering links between the different partners and stakeholders in both areas.
Approaches
Direct Support: SCS will:
(1) Provide technical support and capacity building to partners in inclusive and protective education;
(2) Create partnerships and networks with key duty bearers;
(3) Develop inclusive education index with support from alliance members and
(4) Be directly implementing with support from partners during emergencies. Research: Analysis of reasons of dropout at certain classes, and mapping of other stakeholders and education national strategy for the 2009-2012 period.
Advocacy: SCS will support child-led and civil society advocacy with educational forums on the importance of non-formal education and advocate with government and UNRWA to endorse child protection law in schools.
Capacity building: SCS will contribute towards:
(1) Institutional capacity development,
(2) Training of schools and teachers on inclusive education and active school management,
(3) Training of SCS staff and partners on inclusive formal and non-formal education and
(4) Capacity building of local structures to complete the role of formal education (it can be local village clubs, youth groups, municipalities…)
