The conflict in Saada, North of Yemen, which started in 2004, has continued for five rounds of armed fighting; the most recent officially ended by government announcement on 17 July 2008. Low-level fighting continued between these main periods of conflict, and still continues in some parts of Saada. As a result, and according to Yemen Red Crescent Society (YRCS) and World Food Program (WFP) 130,000 persons including children where displaced by the fifth round of fighting in summer of 2008.
Save the Children has been responding to children and family's needs since the beginning of the last war on Sa'ada in August 2009 and continues to work on the sectors that will have the most impacts on the lives and wellbeing of thousands of children: education, child protection and health and nutrition. Save the Children also leads the Education Cluster with UNICEF and works in close collaboration with local organisations and UN bodies in Yemen.
